Great Garden Marketplace.

Monday, February 8, 2010

Planting season isn’t here yet, but gardeners can lift their spirits with a little shopping therapy at the Great Garden Marketplace, featured at the 8th Annual New Jersey Flower and Garden Show.

More than 100 vendors from the tri-state area and beyond are showcasing their wares at the show held Feb. 18-21 at the New Jersey Convention Center in Edison.

Tailor-made for garden-lovers, the marketplace offers one-stop shopping for rare plants, the latest tools and gadgets, herbal flavorings and garden-themed home décor items. Planning an outdoor project? Meet face-to-face with professionals specializing in everything from patio construction to pond installation. Your spring season begins here!

New this year is an expanded section devoted to outdoor living and entertaining. Browse for awnings, grills and outdoor furniture to outfit your patio or deck. Check out the “green” products section, too, to make your home more energy efficient with high-tech windows, doors and fans.

A complete list of exhibitors is posted on the show’s web site at njflowershow.com. Here’s just a sample of the unique products vendors are offering:

Atlock Farm – Home of “cool plants.” Owner Ken Selody offers rare and exotic cactus, succulents, tropicals and topiaries.

Bittersweet Herb Farm – Taste treats from the garden include herb oils, natural spices with no preservatives or salt, and owner Charles Annibale’s award-winning Wasabi-Ginger Finishing Sauce.

D. Landreth Seed Co. – The oldest seed company in America offers heirloom garden favorites. Flowers, vegetables and bulbs that have stood the test of time.

D&M Images – Painterly photographic images of old English gardens with intriguing close-ups of architectural details from British photographer Duncan Hall.

Dakota Prairie Designs – Hand-painted glass vases and window panels as well as a new line of porcelain jewelry inspired by nature. Designed by artisan Holly Shirek of Yardley, Pa.

E.F. International – Jewel-toned tropical butterflies mounted in shadowboxes. Cruelty-free – butterflies are collected after their short lives are over.

Hionis Greenhouses – Buy direct from one of the state’s largest growers. An unbeatable selection of annuals, perennials and bulb flowers for your spring garden.

Jonathan Green & Sons – Fertilizers and weed controls to make your landscape the envy of the neighborhood. Featuring all-organic lawn products and custom-blended grass seed.

Matawan World of Gardening – Smartly designed outdoor furniture and the largest selection of Weber grills in the area. Everything you need for outdoor entertaining.

Peony’s Envy – Kathleen Gagan brings hard-to-find varieties of herbaceous and tree peonies from her Bernardsville farm. Long-lived and deer resistant!

Swarmbusters Honey – Delicious honey, bee pollen and a brand-new line of hand creams and lip balms, all straight from the hive to you.

Celebrating “Glorious Gardens, Great and Small,” this year’s show (sponsored by Suburu) also features lush display gardens decked in spring’s cheerful colors, a free seminar series with gardening experts and a new “Container Challenge” inspired by the Iron Chef competitions. One lucky couple in the show’s special drawing will win a dream vacation to the world-famous gardening England’s Chelsea Flower Show – don’t leave without entering.
