NJ Flower & Garden - Display Gardens

Monday, February 8, 2010

Flowers! Fragrance! Color! Step into spring at the 8th Annual New Jersey Flower and Garden Show and escape winter’s bone-chilling grip on the dreary, frozen landscape outside.

The new season arrives a full month early with the Garden State’s biggest show, running Feb. 18 – 21 at the New Jersey Convention Center in Edison. Leave your winter blues at the door. Inside is a Technicolor world of blossoms to soothe winter-weary eyes and a hint of balmier days ahead to stir gardeners’ souls.

There’s no better place catch a touch of spring fever than amid the fresh, new greenery of the show’s 10 full-scale display gardens. Celebrating this year’s theme, “Glorious Gardens, Great and Small,” the displays suggest inspired ways to turn backyards of any size into private oases.

Flowering trees, splashing fountains, rivers of rainbow blossoms and exotic specimen plants beckon along these garden paths. Created by top New Jersey designers, the displays summon up the serenity of Asian gardens, the cool recesses of the forest and the nature-friendly impulse to commune with birds and butterflies. Please don’t pick the daisies – but feel free to gather up exciting new ideas for your spring gardens. Here’s a hint of what’s in store:

BRIDGE TO TRANQUILITY
Relaxation this way! Cross the bridge to a haven that arouses the sense and calms them, all at the same time. Smell the lavender, gaze at the camellias and warm yourself by the fire. Let the sounds of the waterfall wash your troubles away.

GEMS UNDER GLASS
Plant treasures from around the world are showcased in a greenhouse recalling the days of Victorian plant hunters and old-fashioned hothouses. The Atlock Farm collection of exotic and rare cactus, succulents, foliage plants and flowers lies within. The glasshouse is surrounded by a setting of elegant formal gardens, fountains and statuary, suggesting a private hideaway on a venerable estate.

HIDDEN TREASURES
A whimsical, playful invitation to explore! Hidden by garden arbors and naturalistic plantings, this garden takes you by surprise at every turn. Enjoy a walk on pathways raised over water and take a moment to enjoy the garden’s many hidden treasures.

BUTTERFLY, FLUTTER BY
Gardeners can help butterflies thrive by providing them with food and shelter. Shaped like a butterfly, this garden overflows with bright blossoms and plants that nourish caterpillars. Learn how to lure these sprightly flyers to your backyard. Displays highlight the amazing migration flights of Monarch butterflies.

THE DEVIATION SENSATION GARDEN
Eight gardens in one! Explore garden influences of Asia, the American Southwest, the rainforest and classic British flower borders. This display also includes havens for birds and butterflies, a pottery “palace” and a Rainbow Garden, where color-drenched flowers surround a gushing fountain. It’s a breath-taking tour!

REALISTICALLY EVER AFTER
This garden emphasizes classic principles of garden design: Simplicity, harmony and a sense of place. A sweep of lawn, a canopy of flowering trees and masses of colorful flowers and foliage give the garden a welcoming serenity. You’ll feel right at home in this private paradise.

INSIDE-OUT
The comforts of indoor living move outdoors in a garden outfitted with a patio kitchen and a place to while away summer afternoons surrounded by bright flowers. This compact garden lives large – and do-it-yourselfers can duplicate this oasis at home with help from the exhibitor’s staff.

TREES FOR THE GLOROUS GARDEN
Imagine a hot summer day. You are relaxing with friends in your backyard, a cold drink in hand. Butterflies are fluttering, birds and bees are buzzing in fragrant flowering baskets. But you and your guests don’t feel the heat under the shade of a magnificent American elm. This garden features shade trees suitable for New Jersey backyards set amid swaths of blossoms and flowering shrubs.

IT’S A COLORFUL WORLD
The accent is on a rainbow of tulips, pansies and flowering shrubs in this vibrant garden where a sparkling pond is the natural focal point. Enter a private retreat between graceful pillars that frame a patio made for relaxing. You’ll want to perch on the stone “sitting wall,” cozy up to outdoor fireplace -- and shut out the world.

Display gardens are the starring attraction but not the only reason to visit the show. After garden-hopping, browse the expanded Garden Marketplace, get advice from experts in the free “Gardeners Go to School” seminar series, and view the winning floral arrangements created by Garden Club of New Jersey designers. Sponsored by Suburu, the show also offers visitors a chance to win a once-in-a-lifetime trip to the world-famous Chelsea Flower Show. Get your tickets early and don’t miss a thing!
