21st Annual Jersey Shore Home Show
Tuesday, December 21, 2010
LINCROFT, NJ—Home renovation can be a nightmare or a dream-come-true depending on whether you’ve found the right help for the job. At the 21st Jersey Shore Home Shore, held Jan. 14-16 at Brookdale Community College, Lincroft, homeowners will have a chance to meet a wide array of area’s top contractors, suppliers and design professionals.
There’s no substitute for a face-to-face encounter to get the ball rolling on projects that will impact your home and, at least temporarily, your daily life. At the MAC Events home show, you’ll be able to review portfolios of completed jobs and see samples of products supplied by general contractors, kitchen and bath specialists, exterior renovation companies and more.
A personal conversation can be a valuable shortcut when you’re faced with hiring remodeling help. You’ll quickly be able to tell if a company is right for what you have in mind – and whether you’ll like having its staff around. Attend the home show and you won’t have to chase around from showroom to showroom since everything is under one roof at the newly renovated Collins Arena.
Stephen Egan, co-owner of Design Line Kitchens in Sea Girt, has been exhibiting at MAC Events shows for 20 years because it puts him in direct touch with potential customers. He believes that two things make contractors a good fit with clients: Proven ability and good personalities.
“It’s important to get out there and talk to people,” he says. “We’re a family-run company that specializes in custom fabrication of kitchen cabinetry, wall units and vanities. As far as we’re concerned there are no ‘trends,’ no cookie-cutter jobs. Everything depends on the customer’s unique preferences and that’s where we start.”
Egan is one of the exhibitors offering a free design consultation to show visitors. Another is Visual Impact Decorating of Holmdel. Owner Jane Cirillo offers complete interior decorating services including the selection of furniture, draperies, art and accessories, and she agrees that personalized service is key.
“Some people want a re-do of the whole home, but others want help with just one project or want to tackle the house room-by-room,” she says. “We treat clients as individuals and work within their budgets and price limits. We’re not high-end only.”
That’s a point also made by Audrey Ingalls of Ingalls Custom Carpentry in Spring Lake. The company headed by her husband Michael, a registered home improvement contractor and home builder, can construct a brand-new home or take on a big addition. But Ingalls also can supply the know-how to renovate kitchens and baths or to enhance a room with detailed woodwork.
“At the home shows we get so many people just looking for a skilled carpenter – something not so easy to find,” she says. “We also like to educate customers about certifications and other consumer protections. If a contractor isn’t registered with the state, for instance, the customer won’t be able to participate in New Jersey’s warranty program for new homes.”
Some exhibitors find it valuable to give new products the broad exposure available at well-established home shows. Wholesale suppliers like Cooper Electric of Tinton Falls come out to show the latest in energy-efficient home goods not only to homeowners, but also to home remodeling professionals.
“We’re an electrical distributor exhibiting for the first time at a home show,” says the Cooper Electric’s Linda Maia-Lopes. “We’ve got what a lot of people are looking for – a complete line of energy-saving lighting fixtures and home automation products, including wireless sensors, motion sensors and other equipment to control lighting effectively.”
Visitors will see these exhibitors and many more – siding companies, window and door installers, landscape contractors, heating and cooling specialists, patio and deck builders, window treatment designers. Everything to make your home more stylish and comfortable is on display in Monmouth County’s newest event venue, the 14,000-square foot Collins Arena, which just reopened after its own $22 million renovation.
Stop by from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Jan. 15 and meet Big Joe Henry, the celebrity weekend host on NJ 101.5-FM. He’ll be broadcasting live from the show with his unique mix of hits from the Golden Age of rock ‘n’ roll and Jersey-centric humor. He’s big, he’s bold and he’s irresistibly up-beat.
Show hours are 1 to 9 p.m. Fri - Jan. 14, at 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Jan. 15 and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan 16 at Collins Arena, located on the campus at 765 Newman Springs Road, Lincroft.
Admission is $8 for adults, $5 for children 12 to 17, free for kids under 12. Seniors can attend for $5 on Jan. 14, and “date night” specials admit two adults for the price of one after 6 p.m. on Jan. 14 and 15.
