Pleasing Plant Combinations

Sandy McDougle - Sandy’s Plants
Sandy's Plants, Inc. is a family-owned perennial wholesale and retail nursery that has been in operation since 1979 in Mechanicsville, VA. The company began as a hobby and has evolved into a perennial nursery that serves garden centers and landscapers in four states and boasts one of the largest selections of perennials on the East Coast. A former special education teacher, Sandy McDougle was an avid gardener in the 1970s who put an extensive amount of time and money into the care of perennial beds. A family move resulted in the disappointing loss of many wonderful plants and so she began salvaging perennials and sharing them with garden centers. That developed into a business that today is a highly successful and respected company that grows over 2,000 varieties of perennials on more than 30 acres.

Mark Viette received his Bachelor of Science degree in Horticulture from Virginia Tech in 1980. He then completed an in-depth course in tissue culture of plants under Dr. Murashige at the University of California in Riverside. He joined his parents in a family business, the André Viette Farm & Nursery, which grows over 3,000 varieties of herbaceous perennials for the sun and shade. He is now Director of Marketing and Sales of the nursery operation. In addition, Mark lectures, writes, teaches and hosts radio programs.
